Planning a visit to Lahore

Climate - the best time to travel to Lahore is during November to March. Try to avoid May until September which can be very hot. The monsoon season is between June and September. 

Things to note before you fly

Regarding visas, British passport holders need visas to travel to Pakistan with a passport validity of six months on the date of application. There is a Malaria risk, so think about medication. It's also recommended to have jabs for diseases such as Polio, Hepatitis A, Diphtheria, Typhoid, Rabies (for certain travellers)along with the usual UK vaccines. When it comes to safety, the consumption of alcohol in public places is prohibited. There are very high penalties (capital punishment) for blasphemy, adultery as well as the possession and use of drugs. The cost of living in Pakistan is much lower than in the UK. Cheap restaurant food will cost you in the region of 200 PKR, while non-alcoholic drinks are roughly 50 PKR. A bottle of water from a supermarket is ca. 50 PKR. During your visit to Lahore try traditional foods - for instance "Nihari", a lamb or beef stew, and "Mithai" sweets.

Lahore - once you are there

For transport from the airport to the city centre, visitors can expect to pay ca. 600 PKR for a taxi to Gulberg and between roughly 800-1000 PKR to the old city. This journey generally takes around 20-30 minutes. The cheapest way of getting from airport to town is by catching the public bus B-08 at a cost of about 35 PKR to the main bus station. Some hotels do operate a shuttle service to and from the airport, so bear this in mind when making your hotel reservation.

Accommodation costs vary. Low budget hostels are usually about 500 PKR for one person and 3 star hotels around 4500 PKR. Lahore provides a cheap and effective bus service with prices from around 18 PKR. The Lahore Metrobus has its own bus track from about 20 PKR for a single trip. Why not buy a rechargeable ticket (token) for a deposit of around 130 PKR? Currently there is a Metro system being built. You can walk around the walled city or alternatively take a rickshaw, but do negotiate the fare before setting off. Taxis are rare here, and if you do require one it should be ordered in advance. Try not to take minivans as these can be uncomfortable and crowded.
