Rome travel tips

The eternal city of Rome

A visit to Rome, once the capital of the known world, takes visitors back in time with its imposing monuments and beautiful landmarks. At every turn visitors will come across palaces, temples, basilicas and military ruins. When these have been explored Rome's delicious food and gelatos await its visitors.

Tips for the best time to travel and catch the attractions

Rome is popular all year round but the best sightseeing weather is from April to October. The peak months of July and August are very hot and the beaches will be very crowded. For one Sunday in March the city is given over to the Rome Marathon (Maratona della Città di Roma). At Easter, in March or April, street processions are held from Maundy Thursday until Palm Sunday. Sunday Easter Mass is held in the Vatican's St Peter's Basilica. June 2nd is Republic Day or Festa della Republica, celebrated with military parades and other events. The Feasts of St Peter and St Paul are marked on June 29th. Many music festivals are held during the Summer months, such as Rock in Roma, from June until August.

Important things to know before you set off

Rome has a strict no-smoking policy in all public areas including restaurants, bars, taxis and public transport. Restaurants have a cover or "coperto" charge for the use of cutlery, plates and table linen, listed on the bill as "coperto" or "servizio". Any bread or Grissini eaten will be charged extra. Tips are not generally expected in Rome's restaurants and visitors will find that living costs, such as restaurant and supermarket food, are cheaper in Rome than in London and the UK.
