Best time for New York
New York is a fantastic city all year round. Be aware that summers are hot, but it can get very cold in winter. For visiting at holiday or festival time, the New Year's Eve celebrations are legendary. The colourful Chinese New Year takes place in February. Another colourful festival is St. Patrick's Day with the parade and events. Don't forget to wear green and a shamrock! For the fashion-conscious, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week takes place in February and September.
Tips and facts before you travel
Thanks to the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) a British citizen with a British passport doesn't need a visa for a visit up to 90 days. Other nationalities holding a British passport require a visa.
New York has strict tobacco and alcohol regulations. The city has many free events and activities. U.S. designer clothing and electronic goods are cheaper in New York than in London.
Groceries are more expensive in New York than London averaging at about 30% higher prices. Restaurant prices are also about 5% more. Bar, café, restaurant prices often aren't tax inclusive. Count on adding 20% per beer for tips. New York is at EDT, which is BST-5 or GMT-4.
Local information
Going from JFK Airport to Mid or Downtown Manhattan, take the AirTrain to Howard Beach subway station and change there. The journey takes about 40-75 minutes. Or take the bus to the subway or the Long Island Rail Road. Express buses go straight to Long Island, Manhattan or Hudson Valley. A taxi to Manhattan costs around $52. From Newark Liberty Airport the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Corridor Lines get you to New York City in approximately 30 minutes. There's a bus from Newark to New York City, also taking about 30 minutes. From LaGuardia Airport to Manhattan take the M60 bus.
You can stay in a hostel for around $34 per person per night. Hotel prices start at about $40 per night per person.
