New York is a lively city that is regarded as one of the most influential in the world. With the Empire State building, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, New York is seen as an iconic American city.

Best time to travel and celebrations

Even though the summers can be very hot and the winters very cold, New York is an excellent year-round destination. The city has many celebrations throughout the year that are both visually spectacular and entertaining. The Chinese New Year is in February and it is a colourful celebration. In March is St. Patrick's Day, which is a big event and the city becomes bedecked with green. Independence day on the 4th of July is famous for its firework displays. In November Thanksgiving is celebrated with balloons and floats. The New Years Even celebrations in New York are legendary.

Before you travel and important information

Before travelling to New York, British citizens with British passports can apply via the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) for visits of up to 90 days, and British passport holders with other nationalities will need a visa (no entry under VWP). The USA has much stricter alcohol and tobacco laws and regulations than Britain and it is important to note that no drinking or smoking in public places and parks is allowed. The average price for groceries is 30% higher than in London, while restaurant prices are around 5% higher. Prices in restaurants, cafes or bars often do not include taxes. Adding 20% extra for tips is expected.

Local information and travel

The AirTrain travels from the airport to the metro of the New York Subway and stops at all terminals, it is around a 40 -75 minute journey to downtown Manhattan. A one-way trip with the metro costs about $2.75 and a seven-day Metrocard pass costs around $29. There are regular buses from the airport, as well as an express bus available that travels to Manhattan, Hudson Valley and Long Island, and a one-way trip cost around $6.50. Taxis can the faster if there are no traffic jams and they are often used by local residents, but taxis are more expensive, with a journey to Manhattan costing around $52. New York offers many different accommodation choices and hostels cost from around $34 per person per night, while hotels are from around $40 for one person per night.
