Officially opened in 1969, the airport is about 40 km or 30 miles north of downtown Houston, near the town of Aldine. The airport is best reached using the US-Highway 59, Texas State Route 548 or Interstate I-45.

The bus numbers 500 (Airport Direct) and #102 operate regularly between the Transit Center in downtown Houston and the airport. The Amtrak is about 2 km (less than a mile) north of the Transit Center and is served by a number of bus routes from downtowns.
