Travel tips for Guinea-Bissau Guinea-Bissau is a country on the West African coast on the Atlantic Ocean bordered by Senegal and Guinea. The former Portuguese colony gained independence in 1974. In the past, the country has experienced numerous coups and a serious civil war, and is still not free of the consequences. Guinea-Bissau is now one of the main hubs of South American drug cartels smuggling cocaine via Africa to Europe.
The country is shaped mainly by erosion and has a very rugged coastline. The inland is faily flat. Only in the east, does this lowland rise to a total of 300 m in altitude. The Bissagos archipelago is in the Atlantic Ocean. Guinea Bissau borders on the Republic of Senegal (a length of 338 km), in the east to Guinea (386 km). With a total area of 36,125 km ², the country is about 10% of the size of Switzerland, and only about 78% of this area is on the mainland.
The climate is mostly tropical and humid. The rainy season lasts from May to October.

The capital Bissau is a picturesque city with about 300,000 inhabitants. Worth seeing are the buildings from the colonial period, including the seat of the President in the Avenida Amlcar Cabral. The Museu Nacional and its collection of African art is very interesting. Covered market halls offer visitors exotic products with a special flair.
