Guinea-Bissau is a country on the West African coast on the Atlantic Ocean bordered by Senegal and Guinea. The former Portuguese colony gained independence in 1974. In the past, the country has experienced numerous coups and a serious civil war, and is still not free of the consequences. Guinea-Bissau is now one of the main hubs of South American drug cartels smuggling cocaine via Africa to Europe.

The country is shaped mainly by erosion and has a very rugged coastline. The inland is faily flat. Only in the east, does this lowland rise to a total of 300 m in altitude. With a total area of 36,125 km ², the country is about 10% of the size of Switzerland, and only about 78% of this area is on the mainland.
