Travel tips for Equatorial Guinea Equatorial Guinea is a country in central Africa which borders on Gabon, Cameroon and the Gulf of Guinea. With the discovery of extensive oil reserves, the country has experienced steady economic growth. However, this wealth is distributed very irregularly. Equatorial Guinea, the only Spanish speaking country in Africa, is hardly touched by tourism.
Equatorial Guinea covers a total area of 28,051 km ². Approximately 26,000 km ² of this area is on the mainland Mbini. There are also several islands belonging to the state territory, the largest of which is 2017 km ² and called Bioko, which until 1973 was known by the name of Santa Isabel and Fernando Poo, then Macias Nguema Byogo (after the President Francisco Macías Nguema). Malabo, the capital of the country, is also on Bioko. The island is home to about 20 percent of the population of the country. Approximately 300 km or 230 miles southwest of the island is Mbini Annobón. Bioko and Annobón were the result of a volcanic hot spot that produced the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe and the Cameroon mountains. The islands of Corisco, Elobey Grande and Chico Elobey are also part of Equatorial Guinea.
A humid, tropical climate dominates.
There are two international airports: Malabo (7 km or 4 miles from the city centre) and Bata (6 km or 3 miles from the city centre). Flights from Europe to Malabo are currently operated by Air France, Iberia , Spanair and Lufthansa.
The capital Malabo is situated on the island of Bioko. Particularly interesting are the beautiful old buildings dating from the colonial period, including the Gothic cathedral and the presidential palace in Plaza de España. From the harbour you can see numerous oil platforms at sea.
The main attractions of the country are its stunning scenery and beautiful beaches. The partially preserved rainforest and the mangrove coast in the province Mbini are breathtaking. A popular destination is the 3007 m high volcano Pico Basile on the island of Bioko. The Corisco Island is located 29 km or 20 miles from the coast, with palm-fringed beaches and excellent bathing facilities. The lush rainforest of the interior is home to gorillas, forest elephants and chimpanzees.
