Enjoy the festival capital of England

Manchester is a vibrant city that has a lot to offer visitors at any time of year, whether you enjoy culture, history, or music.

The best festivals to visit

Manchester is a city with a rich cultural life. Of particular note are the Chinese New Year celebrations, the popular jazz festival at the end of July, and the Manchester Food and Drink festival in September. It is however, perhaps, the renowned Manchester Literature festival that takes place at the end of September for which the city is best known.

Getting to Manchester

Manchester boasts excellent transport links from the airport to the centre of the city. Whether you choose to travel by train, bus, or taxi the journey is quick, and comparatively cheap. Taking the train from Manchester airport to Manchester Piccadilly will cost around £4.50 and take about 15 minutes to reach your destination.
If you prefer to take the Metrolink the price is roughly the same, but the journey to central Manchester will be around 35 minutes.
Taxis are available from Terminal 1 at the airport if you need to get somewhere that is a little inaccessible by public transport.

Where to stay and getting around

Accommodation is generally excellent, with lots of options to choose from whatever your budget may be. Prices are about average for the UK, but are usually cheaper than they would be for similar accommodation in London. Costs vary from 3* hotels at around £60 per room, all the way down to budget accommodation at £15 per person for a shared room.

There are lots of ways to explore the city, even if you don't have access to a car of your own. Buses are always a good choice with three Metroshuttle routes serving all the major, central areas of Manchester. These buses are free, and can take you to most of the places you will want to see. There are also buses operated by Stagecoach which cost about £1.50 per trip.

If you wish to use the modern tram network then your best option is a day ticket which will cost in the region of £5 and allows you to travel anywhere on the network throughout the day. Exploring the many sights of the city centre on foot, at your own pace is also a popular way to get to know the great city of Manchester.
