A city of contrasts

Bangalore has a modern face and ancient heart. This progressive Indian city has a burgeoning club and restaurant scene. It is an industrial hub with a rich historical centre. There are parks, palaces and temples to visit.

Bangalore - some tips and attractions 

October to March is mild, making it the best time to visit. Winter, from November to January, has average temperatures of 15°C. During the Summer months, from February until May, the highest temperatures are at approximately 36°C. The climate is mild compared with other Indian cities. The Monsoon season is from June to October. 

Hindu and Muslim festivals and holidays are celebrated in Bangalore. The 15th August is the Biannual Flower Show, the week of Republic Day and the 26th January is Independence Day. A 9 day festival in March or April is Bangalore Karaga and is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Draupadi. The Someshwara Car festival is in April and also in that month is the procession of Halasuru Someshwara Temple. Karnataka Rajyotsava is 1st of November. This holiday celebrates the foundation of Karnataka state.

Preparing to travel to Bangalore

British passport holders require a visa. Make applications to the Indian High Commission or via an e-visa if flying to certain airports.
Vaccinations, for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid and Polio are necessary. The official language is Kannada. Hindi is also spoken and English is understood. Many road and instructional signs  are in English.
Meals are inexpensive with a thali costing about  Rs 100 INR.  Restaurant food will cost approximately Rs 300.

Arriving in Bangalore 

The BMTC Vayu Vajr bus travels from he airport to the city. It costs between 50 to250 Rs. There are pre-paid taxi counters at the terminal. A pre-paid taxi costs approximately  Rs 1,200. Metered AC Taxis cost between Rs 700 - 1000.

A 20% tax is added to accommodation prices. Cheap accommodation costs Rs 700, mid range, Rs 1500 and luxury, Rs 4000.

A bus pass costs  Rs 40,  but is not valid on Vajra buses. Auto rickshaws are metered and cost Rs 15 plus extra according to the length of the journey. The minimum charge is Rs 25. For night travel add 10% and add 10 - 20 Rs for heavy luggage. Book metered taxis, the rate is Rs 150 within Bangalore. No tip is expected for travel in auto rickshaw and taxi rides.
