      Lahore - an Ancient and modern city

      The capital city of the province of Punjab, Pakistan, Lahore is an important historic city. It is a learning centre with many top colleges and universities. The traditional Anarkali Bazaar sells an array of jewellery and textiles and the modern Al-Hamra Art Centre gives an insight into contemporary culture.

      Lahore's best side 

      The climate between November and March make it the best time to travel. During May and September it can be very hot. The monsoon season falls between June and September.Travel there for holidays and festivals to experience local culture.

      Hints before you travel

      A visa is needed by British passport holders to travel to Lahore. A valid passport must have been held for 6 months upon application.
      Vaccinations are required, Lahore is also in a Malaria area. 
      Recommended vaccines for Pakistan are Polio, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Typhoid and Rabies. Drinking alcohol is not allowed in public spaces. Penalties are high for drug possession and use, adultery and blasphemy. Prices for most things in Pakistan are lower than in the UK. A cheap restaurant meal only costs about 200 PKR for instance, soft drinks cost roughly 50 PKR, and a bottle of water from a supermarket costs approximately 50 PKR. Local foods worth trying are "Nihari"  (lamb or beef stew) and the sweet "Mithai".

      Lahore's accommodation options and transport

      A taxi from the airport to the centre of Lahore costs about 600 PKR. A journey to Gulberg and the old city costs 800 to 1,000 PKR. The journey takes between around twenty and thirty minutes. 

      A public bus is the cheapest option. The B-08 bus costs about 35 PKR and goes to the central bus station. Many hotels operate a shuttle service.

      Accommodation costs vary. A hostel costs 500 PKR per person per night and a mid-price hotel will cost around 4,500 PKR per person per night.
      Local bus prices range from around 18 PKR. The Lahore Metrobus has its own fast bus track and prices start at about 20 PKR for a single trip.
      This service has a rechargeable ticket/token that is available for the cost of a  130 PKR deposit. A Metro system is currently being built. The old, Walled City can be reached on foot. If taking a rickshaw, agree on a price with the driver before getting in. Taxis are not a frequently used transport mode in Lahore so pre-order these. Avoid minivans as they can be very crowded.
