The Spring Lantern Festival in March and the Birthday of Tin Hau the Goddess of the Sea from the end of April to the beginning of May, depending on the lunar calendar, are colourful and fun. Culture fans may enjoy the Dragon Boat Festival on the 5th day after the 5th full moon of the year in May to June, or Establishment Day festivities on July 1st.
Plan ahead for a visit to Hong Kong
British passport holders can stay in Hong Kong without a visa for up to 6 months. Certain vaccines are recommended for Hong Kong including typhus, tetanus, Hepatitis A, diphtheria and rabies and travellers should see their GP at least 8 weeks before their departure date.
Prices are normally lower than in the UK, with lunch in a mid range restaurant costing approximately 100 HKD. Expect to pay about 40 HKD for beer and 20 HKD for soft drinks.
Local information to consider
The Airport Express train takes passengers from the Airport to Hong Kong Station in about 25 minutes for around 100 HKD. Taxis are also available and a journey to Hong Kong Island or Kowloon is likely to cost roughly 200-350 HKD. 44 bus routes operate day and night and tickets are about 10-48 HKD.
Good accommodation for travellers can be found in Tshim Sha Tsui or Mong Kok Jordan, with hostels costing around 250 HKD and 3 star hotels approximately 900 HKD per person per night.
Public transport is inexpensive, and a rechargeable Octopus card can be used for buses, trains, trams, metros and ferries. Taxis on Hong Kong Island are more expensive than they are in Kowloon where passengers will pay around 70 HKD for the first 3 km and then about 15 HKD per km afterwards.
