New York City has five boroughs that sit on the Hudson River. Manhattan, the Big Apple, is at the centre with its fast paced international culture, famous architecture, art, fashion and finance.

Flights to New York from London airports count as one of the most important international routes from UK airports. There are a number of direct flights which can easily be purchased at a low price with a few tricks. At times however it is worthwhile opting for a stopover flight, as prices can be much lower.

Flight London-New York: best time to travel

New York is a year round destination. Winters are very cold and summer is hot, but there are holidays and festivals throughout the year. The New Years Eve celebrations are legendary. In February, the Chinese New Year is celebrated in style. St. Patrick's Day in March is a time for parades and music and dancing in the streets. Mercedes Benz Fashion Weeks are in September and February.

Flights will depart from London Heathrow or Gatwick, landing at one of New York's airports. Popular is the route London Gatwick to New York La Guardia. 

Useful information prior to travelling

Most British citizens need a valid British passports and visa to visit for up to 90 days. The regulations for alcohol and tobacco are strict in the USA, be aware of allowances. Enjoy the many free activities and events in the city.

Many electronic items as well as American designer clothing are cheaper in New York than in London. The cost of living is higher than London's. Groceries cost more in New York than London and restaurants are more expensive.

Remember that prices in restaurants, cafes and bars often do not include tax. Add 20% extra to the bill as a tip. New York is in Time Zone BST-5/GMT-4.

Local tips on where to stay and how to get around

To reach Manhattan from JFK airport take the Airtrain to "Howard Beach" metro station, change there for mid or downtown Manhattan. The journey takes from 40 to 75 minutes. A bus can be taken to the metro station or Long Island Rail Road can be used. Express buses go directly to Manhattan, Hudson Valley or Long Island from the airport. A taxi to Manhattan will cost about $55.  

From Newark Liberty Airport the Northeast Corridor Line and North Jersey Corridor Line trains go to to New York City. The journey takes about 30 minutes. There is also a bus from Newark to New York city that takes 30 minutes. From La Guardia Airport to Manhattan take Bus M60. 

Rated hotels in New York are expensive but there are hostels from around $35 per person per night and hotels from approximately $45 per person a night.
