Useful information about the flight from London to Corfu
Corfu - practical travel information
The island of Corfu, located in the Ionian Sea, offers both sun-seeking beach holidaymakers and active travellers excellent variety. A rich culture and history and varied nature make it one of the most attractive travel destinations in Greece.
When is the best time to travel to Corfu?
The best time to travel for a beach holiday in Corfu is from May to early September. Hikers and cyclists will find temperatures more pleasant in April and September. The autumn months see a lot of rainfall, which results in lush vegetation and gives the island the nickname "Emerald Isle". Things get busy during the large carnival parades on the three Sundays before Rose Monday. The event is Venetian-influenced and more intensely celebrated in Corfu than on the other Greek islands. As part of the Greek Orthodox Easter festival, a magnificent procession takes place every year in honour of Saint Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu.
Discover Corfu: independent travel
The crescent-shaped island has a total area of about 600 km² and is easily explored by hire car or motorbike. Car hire facilities are available in almost all towns. The flatter southern half of the island is particularly interesting for cyclists. The west coast is predominantly rocky compared to the north and east coasts. However, there are beautiful and, above all, less crowded sandy beaches here.
Is there public transport in Corfu?
There is a bus service on Corfu which serves major towns and tourist resorts. Corfu airport is three kilometres from the centre of the capital city, Kérkyra, which can be reached in about 10 minutes. Taxis will cost around 10 euros and about 1.20 euros on the blue bus line 15. The green bus lines cover the rest of the island. Hire cars should be reserved in advance during the peak season.
The cheapest accommodation prices are between 30 and 40 euros in hotels and small flats. Instead of the usual approx. 12 euros, the few hostels in the capital sometimes charge double that during summer months.
