Crete: island with cultural and scenic highlights

Heraklion airport is the gateway to the island of Crete. The city itself reminds visitors a little of Athens. The city has a very long history and offers many cultural attractions. The island of Crete is a popular holiday destinations for beach lovers and sun-seekers from central and northern Europe.

When is it best to travel to Crete?

Crete is a good holiday destination for many months of the year, only the winter months between November and February can be cold and even witness some snowfall in higher altitudes, From March hiking and mountain biking is possible. For a beach holiday, visitors should choose the time between May and October when water temperatures are pleasant. What should you note before your flight to Crete?

Take enough cash for your holiday and make sure passports are valid, and that you are covered by travel and health insurance. Crete is best explored by hire car or moped, although road conditions are sometimes poor. The cost of living locally is comparable or a bit higher than in UK. Food is cheaper at the weekly markets. Tips for excursions would be a hike in one of the many gorges on the island, e.g. the Samaria Gorge, or one of the boat tours offered to numerous destinations.

 

Crete: accommodation and local public transportation

Transport to and from Heraklion International Airport is available by "KTEL" bus. The trip to the centre of Heraklion takes about 20 minutes and fares depend on the zone. The bus number 78 travels to the bus station A in Heraklion within about 10 minutes. From there buses serve further destinations in the north, e.g. Rethymnon for about 8.30 EUR or to Chania for about 15 EUR. The cab price to central Heraklion from the airport is about 12 EUR. Some hotels also offer a free transfer.
