Ready for Goa
Goa used to be one of the wealthiest places on earth back in the 16th century, however these days the most stunning thing about it is the nature and sights. Goa is very different from the rest of India, having it's own kind of charm and personality. This is because it was under Portuguese rule separate from India for over 400 years. There's also a lot of harmony in Goa due to the fact that there's a diverse mix of religions, which lends it a very laid back atmosphere and one that tourists notice as soon as they arrive.
Winter in Goa
Winter is the best time to travel to Goa, this is between November and February, when temperatures reach a max of 28C. Avoid the monsoon season starting in June. In February you can experience the wonderfully bright Goa Carnival and August or September sees the Ganesha Chaturthi celebrations which last for 10 days. Diwali is celebrated in October to November and Goa also celebrates the Christian holidays of Christmas and Easter as a quarter of the population is Christian.
About Goa
In Goa people officially speak Konkani, but some also speak Hindi and Marathi. During Christmas, Easter and festivals make sure you book travel and hotels well in advance. Prices are lower than in New Delhi and a thali (small but tasty platter of street food) will cost you Rs 150 and a restaurant meal Rs 400. If considering a pre-paid taxi make sure you check the taxi rate board outside the office. As a rough guide a taxi from Panjim is around Rs 700, Anjuna Rs 1,000, Aramabol Rs 1,400, and Agonda Rs 1,500. Also ensure you negotiate fares in advance.
Local Goa tips
Basic accommodation costs around Rs 700, mid range is around Rs 1200 and luxury hotels will be around Rs 4000. Public transport consists of taxis, motorcycle taxis and the buses which are run by Kadamba Transport Corp, the minimum bus fare is around Rs 3 for 2km then 1 Rs for every Km after that. Be aware that Goa is a busy place and will have a lot of tourists, especially in popular areas. There is also a siesta time from 1.30pm to 3.30pm where shops will be shut and shops in Panaji also shut around 8pm.
