The city of Colombo with its tremendous appeal is a fabulous year round destination. More moderate temperatures are between January and March which is great for touring. During May to July and October to January, make sure you pack your rain gear. These times of year are considered the rainy season. 

Facts to know

British citizens need a visa to visit Sri Lanka. Their passport also has to be valid for at least 6 months upon arrival. It is recommended that you are check you have boosters for all of your vaccines including Hepatitis A, diphtheria, rabies, tetanus, and typhus.

Remember to never turn your back on statues of Buddha and be respectful of the temples. Colombo is steeped in old traditions that should be respected while you are visiting the city. 

The cost of living in Sri Lanka is much cheaper than you will be accustomed to. Street food starts at around 100 LKR for snacks and lunch is approximately 300 LKR. Evening meals in a restaurant start at about 750 LKR with beer at around 200 LKR. 

Colombo information

In the off peak season, the price of a hostel starts at 1000 LKR per person, per night. Better quality rooms begin around 5000 LKR per night, per person. 

Once you arrive at the airport, take the intercity bus number 187 to the main station. This will take up to an hour to reach the city and cost you about 110 LKR. Once you get to the main station, you can catch a connecting bus to other destinations. If you are planning on seeing other places in Sri Lanka make sure to book the train in advance.

The cheapest way to get around besides walking is by using buses. You can also take a taxi or a tuk-tuk. A tuk-tuk is a three wheeled vehicle used as a taxi. Tuk-tuks with a meter are the most practical choice. The prices for a tuk-tuk begin at 50 LKR. A 4-5 km ride costs about 200 LKR and a 6 km one costs approximately 250 LKR.

Colombo is a beautiful place that combines the new with the old. You can see new buildings, visit the beach, or see the ruins of the past all in one city.
