Glasgow has what is known as an Oceanic climate, meaning that winters tend to be cool and cloudy, and the weather in summer can be unsettled. Travel in spring between March and May for the best weather conditions. Alternatively, you could visit in June for the city's Jazz Festival and the West End Festival, or experience a true Scottish new year with Hogmanay on 31st December.
General Glasgow Facts
The cost of living in Glasgow tends to be lower than nearby Edinburgh, so expect accommodation to be affordable. However, beware that prices can spike when there is a big football match or a major music event. It might be a good idea to arrange car hire before travelling, but remember that parking in the city centre costs 40p per 12 minutes. Otherwise, prices are fairly cheap by British standards and you can eat out for around £10 or grab a beer for approx. £3 a pint.
Arriving and getting around Glasgow
If you are arriving by air, you will either land at Glasgow International or Prestwick Airport. From Glasgow International, catch Shuttle Bus 500 into town, which costs around £5 or bus 747 costing £4. For a budget option, you can also catch local bus 66 and catch a train into the city centre from Paisley Gilmour Street, though this will take a little longer. Glasgow Prestwick Airport is around 50km south of the city, so getting in will take longer. Direct trains take 45 minutes at a cost of about £3.50 when you present your boarding card. At other times, look out for bus X77.
For accommodation, expect to pay approximately £10 for a bed in a shared hostel room. You can find double rooms in mid-range accommodation for £25 and a room at a 3 star hotel for around £50.
When getting around Glasgow, a travelcard is a sensible way to travel. For only bus journeys, a day card costs about £4.50. The underground costs roughly £1.60 per journey, or £4 or thereabouts for all-day travel, but its coverage is more limited. A good option is a combination ticket like the Daytripper, which costs around £11.50 and covers most public transport options. Taxis are a good alternative costing approx. £3 initially, then £1 per km after that. Getting from the city centre to the West End should cost around £5-£6.
