Planning your trip
British passport holders visiting Singapore for a stay of 30 days or less do not normally require visas. However, all passports must be valid for at least six months from date of entry. Your routine vaccinations should be up-to-date. Recommended vaccines for Singapore travel are hepatitis A and typhoid.
Singapore has strict laws. Eating and drinking on public transport are not permitted and is subject to high fines. Spitting in public is also prohibited. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas. Dress modestly by covering your arms and legs when visiting places of worship and remove your shoes outside. The cost of food in Singapore is very cheap, approximately 6 SGD in markets.
Singapore transport and accommodation choices
A 30-minute ride costing about 2 SGD on the metro gets you to Singapore's city centre from Changi International Airport. A bus trip from the airport to the centre takes approximately 60 minutes. Taxis cost about 30 SGD. At night, taxi cost increases to approximately 50% of metered fare. Good areas for accommodation include Little India, Chinatown, Geylang or around Arab Street. Hostel accommodation starts at around 30 SGD. Singapore has an affordable public transport system through its streamlined EZ-Link system. Visitors can purchase the Singapore Tourist Pass. The tourist-friendly pass is a special EZ-Link card that is a rechargeable chip card for reduced fares on the MRT and LRT trains, as well as travel on Singapore's basic bus services. It permits tourists to enjoy unlimited travel on these public transport services. If travelling by taxi, fare prices are higher at night and during rush hours.
