Location
Opened in 1928, the airport is in Saarbrücken-Ensheim, about 14 miles east of downtown Saarbrücken. Motorists may reach the airport on the motorway A6, taking exits "Saarbrücken-Fechingen" and "St. Ingbert-West" or/and using the airport expressway L108.
Between Saarbrücken central bus station and Blieskastel the Saar-Palatinate regional bus R10 operates at a regular basis, this also stops at the airport in Ensheim.
History
Between 1928 and 1939 there was another airport in Saarbrücken in the district of Sankt Anual, which during the first five years could only be used for flights in the summer season due to technical limitations. Nevertheless, passenger numbers rose steadily and so the little airport relatively quickly reached its capacity limit. Due to the difficult aerodynamic conditions in Sankt Anual, expansion plans were rejected and a new airport then planned and built from 1937 to 1939 in the district of Ensheim. However, due to the outbreak of the war the airport could not be opened in the same year.
Regular operations were only again taken up with the first scheduled flight operated by LTU from Saarbrücken to Düsseldorf in 1967. In 1972 the airport in Saarbrücken was officially granted international status and the airport grounds were then further expanded. This encompassed the expansion of the runway to 2,100 meters which meant that in subsequent years more and more German domestic flights could be operated to major German airports such as to Berlin, Hamburg, Munich or Frankfurt. The aim was to overcome the stagnation after the Second World War by enabling national and international transport. New building work and the steady increase in passenger numbers since 1998 secure the future of Saarbrücken Airport.
