Copenhagen Airport

Copenhagen airport is a major international airport in Denmark's capital city. There are two airports in Denmark’s capital city: the international Copenhagen Kastrup Airport (Kastrup Lufthavn) and the smaller sport airport Roskilde. Copenhagen-Kastrup International Airport is 8 km south-east of Copenhagen’s city centre in Kastrup, a district in the Borough of Tårnby, on the island of Amager. Copenhagen’s airport is Scandinavia’s most important airport, being an international commercial airport serving air traffic between parts of the world and the numerous national and regional airports in Scandinavia and the region south of the Baltic Sea. The airport represents an important intersection and is a major link for many parts of northern Europe due not just to the presence of the Oresund Bridge and the rail link to Sweden.

Copenhagen Airport is the hub of SAS and therefore also of the Star Alliance, which is comprised of a network of 16 international airlines, flying to a total of 795 airports in 139 countries. Copenhagen Airport is also Scandinavia’s hub for the air freight express company DHL. By the number of passengers, SAS is the biggest airline at Copenhagen Airport. There is a direct connection from Copenhagen airport to 132 destinations worldwide, 19 of which are intercontinental, 84 within Europe, 22 are Nordic, and 7 domestic connections. Airlines based at the airport include: Go Airlines and Korean Air. Other airlines serving the airport are: airBaltic (Dnipropetrovsk, Kiev Borispol, Minsk, Moscow-Sherem, Riga, St. Petersburg), bmibaby (Edinburgh, Glasgow), easyJet (Berlin-Brandenburg), Norwegian (Oslo), SkyEurope (Bratislava, Budapest-Ferihegy, Vienna), Transavia (Amsterdam Schiphol, Rotterdam) and Virgin Express (Brussels International Airport). Terminal 1 is used for domestic flights, flying for instance to the Island of Bornholm and to Jutland. Flights to and from Greenland and the Faroe Islands on the other hand, use Terminals 2 and 3, along with the other international flights.

Copenhagen Airport has an area of 1100 ha and was opened on 20.04.1925 as one of the first private airports of the world - at that time with a grass track serving as runway. With an annual total number of passengers of 1 million, Copenhagen Airport in 1965 received the prize for the world’s best airport.
