Information on Ryanair
Information about Ryanair
Ryanair was founded in 1985 and is a member of the European Low Fares Airline Association (ELFAA). It is Europe's largest low-cost airline (just ahead of easyJet), and is at place 3 of all European airlines (just behind Air France / KLM, Lufthansa and British Airways). The success of Ireland’s Ryanair is strongly connected to the success of low-cost airlines in general, which has been evident since the end of the 1990s. However, Ryanair seems to be the sole airline in Europe with a consistent "no frills" concept. Steadily rising passenger numbers can be attributed to the low-cost of tickets, the airline's punctuality, and a friendly and efficient service.
Ryanair offers point-to-point flights, meaning that it is not responsible for connecting flights, which is an essential element of the short touchdowns of the aircraft at the airports that are served.
As Europe’s leading low-cost airline Ryanair offers hndreds of routes between countries in Europe as well as overseas, serving many different airports. Of the European bases, London Stansted is the most important base for Ryanair. Other bases include Dublin, Milan-Bergamo, Brussels-Charleroi and Alicante. Other important and popular routes include Birmingham-Malaga and Bristol-Malaga.
Outside Europe, only airports in Morocco are served. About one quarter of all airports operated by Ryanair are located in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Approximately 20% of Ryanair flights commute back and forth between the islands. This tendency is, however, on the decrease as Ryanair’s European route network is being expanded. Ryanair is also well established in Germany, Spain, Italy, France and Poland, and even here operates on a large number of routes. The airline operates services in North Africa, where it specialises in domestic short-haul flights. Ryanair is treading in the footsteps of Easyjet with planned expansion towards North Africa and Eastern Europe (former Yugoslavia, the Baltic States).
In 2003 Ryanair bought out the low-cost offshoot Buzz from KLM (UK).
Fleet
Ryanair owns only aircraft of the type Boeing 737 and is planning to bu,y approximately 120 new Boeing 737-800 by 2010.
