Visit Vienna from April until October when the climate is warm. Spring lasts from late March while the summer months of July and August can often be hot and humid. The winters are sometimes cold and wet. Many people travel to Vienna to enjoy the city's holidays and festivals. Enjoy New Year's concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic and in February the Vienna Opera Ball. During May and June there's the Vienna Festival with opera, dance and theatre.

Before you arrive in Vienna

In Vienna, it is possible to use your credit card in large shops and restaurants, smaller places may only take cash. A cheap meal in Vienna can cost less than 10 Euros. When it comes to tipping, add about 10% to the bill and tell waiting staff how much you want to pay (don't leave a tip on the table).

Local Vienna information

An overground train, the S-Bahn S7, takes around 25 minutes from Vienna airport to the city centre costing about 4.50 Euro for a single ticket. Using the CAT/City Airport Train, which takes around 16 minutes to reach the centre of the city, costs about 12 Euros. Visitors could pay anywhere between 25-35 Euros for a taxi, but should agree on a price before the journey starts.

Hostel accommodation in Vienna is roughly 15 Euros per person while hotels are about 70 Euros per person.

The city's public transport system is much cheaper than taxis. The underground is the fastest option. A single journey costs about 2.20 Euros while a day travel card is around 7.60 Euros. All tickets must be validated before the journey starts. If staying in the city for a few days, the Vienna Card might be a good choice. It covers 48 hours for 19 Euros, or a 72 hour card will cost about 22 Euros. This also includes discounts in some galleries. Try Wiener Schnitzel or Sachertorte, both typical Austrian foods.
