Originating as a small fishing village, Sharm El Sheikh has developed into a very popular holiday resort om the Red Sea. On the outskirts of the city, for example, there are important diving areas and the city itself has a wide range of interesting tourist attractions.
When is the best time to travel to Sharm El Sheikh?
Sharm El Sheikh is a good year round holiday destination. The weather is particularly good from March to June and from September to November. Here, beach holdaymakers and divers will be spoiled by excellent water temperatures.
The most important holidays in Egypt are mainly Islamic holidays such as Ramadan, the month of fasting. One of the many interesting events held in Hurghada is the camel race in April.
Useful information and tips for preparing your trip
In general, Egypt requires visa from British tourists. The visa can be applied for at the Egyptian Embassy in the UK or purchased at the airport on arrival and will be valid for 30 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the leaving date.
Vaccinations are not compulsory, but visitors would be wise to make sure they are inoculated against hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and diphtheria.
The cost of living is based on tourism and can be highcompared to costs in non tourist areas. An inexpensive meal in a restaurant costs from about 70 EGP.
The underwater world of the Red Sea is well worth seeing. Snorkelling in the Red Sea, for example, costs about 460 EGP.
How to get transort from Sharm el Sheikh airport
Taxis are available directly at the airport and cost about 50 EGP into the centre of the town. Prices should always be agreed upon before starting the journey. Outside the airport, there are also minibuses that have to be hailed down. Prices will cost about 3 EGP.
There are no backpacker hostels in Sharm El Sheikh. For this reason, accommodation is mainly available in hotel complexes. A room in a three-star hotel, for example, costs from 140 EGP per night.
