The Northern Mariana Islands (officially: The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands) are geographically part of the Mariana Islands located south of Japan and north of Guam. The main industries on the islands are agriculture and tourism. The archipelago is an area outside the United States in the Pacific Ocean. The political system consists of a bicameral parliament – the Senate and House of Representatives of nine to 18 members - and an elected governor. The people of the Marianas are US citizens, but do not have a vote in the US presidential elections.
The island chain stretches over 650 km (400 miles) in the Pacific Ocean and consists of 16 volcanic islands, of which Saipan, Tinian and Rota are the largest.
