Travelling to Norfolk Island

Norfolk Island is an overseas territory of Australia in the Pacific Ocean south of New Caledonia, to the east of Australia and north of New Zealand. British explorer, James Cook, discovered the island in 1774 and it was then used as a British penal colony between 1788 and 1855. 33% of the islands population are descended from the Bounty mutineers, who are still called Pitcairns as they originally lived on the Pitcairn Islands, 6,000 km to the east and were only moved to Norfolk Island in 1856.

Norfolk Island is a South Sea island. The coast consists mainly of inaccessible cliffs apart from the southern part around Kingston. The two mountains Bates (318 m, about 1000 ft ) and Pitt (316 m/1000 ft) are the highest points. Nepean Island and Phillip Island, two smaller islands, are also part of the national territory of the Norfolk Island. Due to the fact that all three islands are of volcanic origin, the soil is very fertile, providing for excellent conditions for agriculture.

A subtropical climate predominates on the island with average temperature of about 19 °C and 1350 mm of annual rainfall. Between May and July, frequent typhoons wreak havoc on the island.
