Nauru travel tips

What to know before travelling to Nauru

Nauru (Ripublik Naoero, Republic of Nauru) is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean belonging to the same group of coral islands as the island territory of Micronesia (not to be confused with the State of Micronesia). Since the discovery of vast phosphate deposits in 1900, the main economic resource of Nauru is mining this natural fertiliser which was predicted to become depleted around 2010. The island will then be cleared of the phosphate transport systems and developed for tourism.

Nauru is a coral island and typical raised atoll on top of an old volcanic cone. The coral is very deep, stretching to approximately 2,000 m below sea level and rising up to 61 m above sea level. The highest point is Command Ridge. Nauru has a relatively small lagoon, Buada Lagoon. Except for a narrow coastal strip, the inner part of the island consists of phosphate (Nauruit) covered by the century old fossilised excrement of seabirds. Almost 2 square km of the island are covered in forest.

Nauru: when to go and how to get there

Nauru has an equatorial ocean climate with cooling trade winds from March to October. Most rain falls between November and February.

The national airline, Air Nauru, has ceased operations. Nauru International Airport is currently served by Alliance Airlines of Australia at weekends from Brisbane via Honiara.

Yaren is the unofficial capital besides Aiwo.

Relics of the Pacific war along the coast and dreary phosphate fields dominate the interior of the island. The best beach on Nauru is Anibare Bay with its pristine environment. Bathing on the east coast is risky due to the dangerous underwater currents, strong surf and the Portuguese galley, a jellyfish with poisonous tentacles of up to 60 meters in length.
