Federated States of Micronesia travel tips

Micronesia: country facts

The Federated States of Micronesia is an island nation in the Pacific ocean comprised largely of the Caroline Islands. Since 1986, the islands have been in free association with the United States. The main income of the inhabitants is from farming and fishing. Yap, a little-known diver's paradise, is considered the most primitive island in Micronesia and offers visitors an incomparable cultural experience.

Micronesia is characterised as a developing country of subsistence agriculture and fishing. High-grade phosphate ore is also mined on the islands and forms a further source of income for the inhabitants. As yet, there are no major industries on the islands, and small businesses produce products mainly for the domestic market. Only industrially manufactured textiles and souvenirs have some economic importance as export goods.

There is a potential for tourism on the islands, but this has not been fully developed due to the remoteness of the islands and the lack of infrastructure. The sale of licenses for commercial fishing in territorial waters to foreign fishing fleets forms the largest part of revenue. The largest revenue source is in the form of grants from the U.S., which are paid under the Association Agreement.

Micronesia: getting there and around

The Federation consists of the states of Chuuk (formerly Truk), Pohnpei and Kosrae, which form the Eastern Carolines, and the State of Yap, together with the independent nation of Palau in the western Carolinas. Chuuk, with 294 islands, measures 127 square km and counts 65,000 inhabitants. Kosrae, with five islands, has a total of 110 square km and 15,000 inhabitants. Pohnpei, made up of 163 islands, has an area of 344 square km with 45,000 inhabitants. Yap is made up of 145 islands, measures119 square km and has 10,000 inhabitants. The atolls are mostly of volcanic origin; they are mountainous and forested. Everywhere along the coast there are mangrove forests and beautiful sandy beaches.

Pohnpei International Airport is located approximately 2 km north of Kolonia, on the island of Dekehtik. There are regular scheduled flights by Continental Airlines to Pohnpei from Guam and other Micronesian islands, such as Chuuk, Honolulu, Kosrae, Kwajalein. Flights to the Majuro Atoll in the Marshall Islands are currently being operated by Aloha Airlines.

Palikir is the capital of Micronesia and is located on the island of Pohnpei. In the north of the island is the main city on Pohnpei, Kolonia, which is often mistakenly thought to be the capital of Micronesia.
