The Queen of The Arabian Sea

The city of Kochi has a population of 2.1 million and is a major port city on India's south-west coast. The city has a long history and was an important hub for the spice trade from the 14th century onwards. Kochi is very cosmopolitan and has been strongly influenced by its historical trading partners, as well as the many different waves of immigrants. The city has many places of interest such as the Pallipuram Fort. Built in 1503 by the Portuguese, it's India's oldest standing European fortification.

When Visit Kochi?

Kochi has a tropical climate, with daytime temperatures ranging from around 30 to 35°C. The monsoon season lasts from mid-May to September, with the following months up to February experiencing cool winds and some showers. The summer months between February and May are hot and sticky especially in March and April.

Kochi plays host to a number of festivals throughout the year. The Onam harvest festival is a 10-day event over late August and early September. The city also celebrates Hindu, Christian and Islamic festivals like Diwali, Christmas and Eid ul-Fitr.

Kochi - Before You Go

A visa is necessary to enter India. This can be obtained at the Indian High Commission in London or, in some cases, upon arrival at Kochi airport. Check with the High Commission beforehand.

In terms of vaccines, hepatitis A, tetanus and typhoid are usually recommended, though others, like cholera and hepatitis B, should be considered.

Eating out is cheap in Kochi. A full meal out costs around 50 rupees. Avoid drinking tap water and avoid eating unpeeled raw vegetables.

Kochi Airport Transfer, Accommodation and Local Transport

Cochin International Airport is around 30 km from the centre of Kochi. The air-conditioned bus operated by KSRTC costs around 80 rupees and takes about an hour and 40 minutes from here to the city centre. A taxi from the airport is faster and will cost around 1,200 rupees.

A low-cost hostel costs about 800 rupees, with a mid-priced hotel at around 2,000 rupees. The Ernakulam is a great place for accommodation to suit all budgets.

There's a range of transport options in Kochi. City buses start at around 4 rupees. Rickshaws are around 10 rupees per 1.25 km. Taxis start at 50 rupees, or if you want to drive yourself, scooter hire stands at about 300 rupees a day.
