When to travel

The favourite time for tourists to visit is from October to March because of the sunny and mild weather. Summer in Hyderabad is extremely hot. Monsoon season is best avoided unless you love rain. Festivals are held throughout the year in Hyderabad. Ganesh Chaturthi is in August and September, while Diwali, which is the festival of lights, is celebrated in October. In July and August Bonalu honours the Goddess Mahakali. Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan, and Eid al Adha, otherwise known as the Sacrifice Feast, occur on dates that change every year.

Before your arrival

If you have a British passport you will need a visa to visit Hyderabad. You may be able to apply for an e-Tourist Visa. Your passport will need a 180 days validity and two blank pages when you apply. You will also need to make sure that your routine vaccinations are up to date. It is recommended that, at the very least, you get Tetanus, Typhoid and Hepatitis A jabs. It is highly recommended that you also get Hepatitis B, Diphtheria, Cholera, Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies vaccines. Life in Hyderabad is much cheaper than the UK. A cheap meal is about Rs 120, and a restaurant meal is usually around Rs 250 for instance.

Local knowledge

To get to central Hyderabad from the airport, you can take the air conditioned Airport Liner which costs approximately Rs 100 to 250 for a single ticket. In front of the arrival terminal visitors will encounter the radio taxis and fares for these are about Rs 40 per km. These can have a surcharge at night which is 25% between 11 pm and 5 am. Be sure to negotiate fares before you take taxis and autos. They cost approximately Rs 20 for 2 km, then Rs 10 for each further km. Buses are also available through the APSRTC. Prices begin at Rs 20 but the vehicles can often get very crowded. Cheap accommodations is approximately Rs 1000 per person, per night, an average room is around Rs 2000 while a luxury room is about Rs 3500 per person, per night. Come for the culture. Visiting Hyderabad is a once in a lifetime experience.
