Why travel to Munich?

Munich is not only the capital of Bavaria, but the gateway for the Alps. With its backdrop of forests, lakes and mountains it's one of Germany's greenest cities. The attractive traditional architecture is a flash back to the Bavarian royal past.

Of course, Munich is famous for its huge beer halls, but there's also the bustling Marienplatz Square at the heart of Munich, or the Rathaus Town Hall with its tall towers, the Medieval St Peters church, as well as the Isar Gate from the fourteenth century.

There are many direct flights from London to Munich. The flight time comprises around an hour 50 minutes. 

When is the best time for travelling to Munich?

Climate-wise, while winters are colder than in the UK, with an average temperature of -4°C, summers are usually hotter with temperatures up to 35°C. For visiting Munich at festival time, the famous Oktoberfest beer festival takes place from around 15th September and usually runs until 3rd October which is German Unity Day, a national holiday throughout Germany with festivities to celebrate German reunification in 1990. The beer festival draws millions of visitors each year with its beer drinking, Bavarian music and dancing.

Any tips before travelling to Munich?

Munich is famous for its beer and football. The first rate museums, fashion and art are other good reasons to visit the city. Eating out in Munich is usually less expensive than in London. Overall, the cost of living is slightly less expensive than in the UK.

Hotels are expensive in Munich averaging at about 120 EUR per night. Hostels cost from around 15 or 20 EUR for a bed. Be aware that you should book ahead if you are planning a trip during the Oktoberfest and you can expect prices to be higher during the Oktoberfest.
 

Munich local information

From Munich Airport take the bus to Munich main station. The journey takes around 45 minutes. Or you can go to the Munich Exhibition Centre (Messe München) using the shuttle bus. Trains S1 and S8 go to the main station (Hauptbahnhof) or the east station (Ostbahnhof). A taxi will cost you from around 50 EUR for an approximately 40 minute journey to the city centre. 

For getting about in Munich, there's a public transport network with the metro (U-Bahn), trains (S-Bahn), buses and trams. You can buy a day travel card (Tageskarte) for the inner city, costing around 6.50 EUR. A single ticket costs about 3 EUR. Taxi fares are less expensive than in London.
