When to go and what to see
Miami has warm temperatures all year round. However, the best time to go is March till May and take note that June to November is hurricane season. Holidays, festivals and celebrations are when Miami really comes to life. In January, the Orange Bowl Festival is the highlight of the football season with a parade through the city. At the beginning of March, Carnival has processions, parties and parades especially in Little Havana; the highlight is the Calle Ocho, with Salsa dancing on the streets. The 4th of July Independence Day celebrations see the city painted red, white and blue, many residents have the day off work so there is a fantastic atmosphere with lots happening on the beach.
Important information before you go
British passport holders may be eligible for the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) for visits up to 90 days, however British passport holders with other nationalities will need a visa (no entry under VWP). Please check prior to travelling. Recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A, Typhus, Tetanus and Diphtheria, check with your doctor first.
Carnival is very popular with tourists, so hotel rooms are booked up quickly during this time - visitors should book well in advance to ensure a reservation and be aware that the city will be very busy.
Eating out is not so cheap, fast food starts from around $7, a meal in a restaurant starts from around $20 and a beer is approximately $5. The Miami time zone is GMT -5 hours.
Transport and accommodation in Miami
Public transport options between Miami airport and downtown include the Miami Metromover (Peoplemover), several metro buses, Metro rail (overground), tri-rail (train) and Greyhound buses. The Metromover is free of charge in the downtown area and a good public transport network covers the entire Miami and South Beach area, as well as the rest of Florida. A single metro rail/bus fare is around $2.25. Taxis are expensive at around $15 for a 3km journey.
Hostels and guesthouses start from around $25 per night in dorms, while double rooms start from approximately $50.
