Tips and tricks to help you find cheap flights from London Heathrow to Mauritius
Useful information about the flight from London Heathrow to Mauritius
Why holiday in Mauritius?
Mauritius is a beautiful island that lies to the east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean with an excellent climate and great beaches. A major tourist hotspot, it is most famous for it's sandy beaches and clear blue sea.
When is the best time to travel to Mauritius?
The island has an all-year round tropical climate and peak travel times are from September to November and March to May. Between January and March the island is susceptible to tropical cyclones. There are many festivals throughout the year, including the Tamil festival "Cavadee", in January/February and the "Diwali" festival of lights in October/November.
What should you know before you travel to Mauritius?
Travellers with British passports do not need a visa to enter the country, and the maximum stay is 60 days after your arrival. You must have a return ticket or travel documents for further journeys.
It is recommended that you get Hepatitis A, Typhus, Diphtheria and Tetanus jabs before you visit. Mosquitoes are a big problem in tropical climates, and can pass on Dengue and Chikungunya as well other diseases, so cover up with long clothing or use mosquito repellent. Avoid drinking tap water where possible and be aware that the sea has strong undercurrents so check to make sure the beach where you are swimming is safe.
Imported goods and prices within hotel complexes are relatively expensive. Cheap meals and drinks are widely available outside these areas. Tipping is not common.
Mauritius: what are the transport and accommodation options?
- It is advised you book a taxi from the airport to the city centre. Companies like Taxis Mauritius run from the airport, and the price and journey times depend on the destination. It costs approximately 35 EUR to Grand Baie or Flic en Flac (Airport Taxi costs around 2000 to 2100 MUR).
- Buses are not recommended if you are travelling with heavy luggage. Bus 198 goes to Port Louis and takes 70 minutes. Buses are cheap, around 30 MUR. The last bus leaves in the early evening. Bus 9 goes to Curepipe or Mahébourg, and bus 10 heads to Rivière des Gallets or Mahébourg.
There is plenty of tourist accommodation on the island:
- A guesthouse costs around 800 MUR per person per night,
- a 3 star hotel on average costs 3.600 MUR.
- Basic holiday rentals cost around 1.200 MUR per night in popular resorts like Grand Baie or Flic en Flac.
Using public transport to get around Mauritius is cheap: a short journey costing roughly 15 MUR, and longer journeys are approximately 30 MUR. The bus service runs till 8 pm. When taking a taxi, negotiate prices beforehand. Day tours in taxis cost approximately 2000-2600 MUR.
