Located on the south coast of England, Southampton is sheltered by hills. This makes it warmer and sunnier compared to many other UK cities. The best time to travel is from May until September. The city hosts numerous holidays and festivals. Amongst these are the Isle of White Bestival during September, Common People Festival in May, the Soundclash Festival held in May, a fantastic Beer Festival in May/June and Southampton Mela in July. Cowes Week is usually held during August, this is a very famous and the oldest regatta in the world. There's also the International Boat Show in the month of September.
Prepare to go to Southampton
Southampton has an interesting seafaring past. Before you travel, why not arrange to visit the Sea City Museum, Tudor House or Southampton City Art Gallery? There's also the Medieval Merchant's House, Hythe Pier and for evening entertainment, the Mayflower Theatre. The cost of living here is about average for the UK and around 10% cheaper than London. Expect to pay around £12 for a meal out and £3 for a pint of beer.
Southampton's transport options
From the airport to the city centre travellers can take the train. The journey time is around seven minutes at a cost of about £4. The U1C bus to central Southampton costs about £2. Options also exist to other parts of the country: a train to Winchester takes approx. ten minutes and to London Waterloo about 70 minutes. B&B accommodation (single rooms) will set you back around £20, whereas single rooms in a hotel are priced from about £65. There are regular buses in the city centre and to towns and cities nearby. Fare prices: adult singles in Southampton city zone will be about £1.50 (returns approx. £2.50). Day passes are around £3.20. There are also night buses that run after midnight and also travel to other towns in the county. The ferry to the Isle of Wight costs around £9 one-way for foot passengers.
