Mauritius climate and best festivals
Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate, which means it has favourable weather throughout the year. The best time to go for a relaxing beach holiday is from October until May. The coolest months are from July to September, and are ideal for an inland activity holiday. In January or February (the exact date varies), the Chinese New Year is celebrated with firecrackers, dancing and other family friendly activities. During this time the Cavadee Festival also takes place, which is a Tamil Indian religious occasion that is celebrated by fire-walking and other rituals. Holi Festival, which is the Indian festival of colours and fire, takes place in March.
Handy information before travelling to Mauritius
British passport holders do not require a visa to enter Mauritius and may stay for a maximum of 60 days. It is essential that travellers are in possession of a return or onward travel ticket as proof of intention to leave. Passports must be valid for the duration of the visit.
As a precaution, it is advisable to get vaccinated against Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Typhus, and Diphtheria. Apply mosquito repellent and wear suitable clothing to protect against insect bites during the day as well as at night, as both Dengue and Chikungunya Fever are prevalent. Be aware that there may be strong undercurrents in the sea. The cost of imported goods and anything within hotel complexes tend to be quite high. A cheap meal will generally cost about 500 MUR, and a beer is around 150 MUR. Spices and other local foods are usually quite cheap.
Transport and accommodation in Mauritius
When travelling from the airport to the city, it is advisable to book a taxi in advance. Fares vary according to distance. Expect to pay about 35 EUR to Grand Bai or Flic en Flac. Public transport is a cheaper option. It costs about 15 MUR for a short bus journey, and around 30 MUR for a longer trip. However, bus services only operate until approximately 8 pm.
Accommodation costs vary from one place to the next, and depending on the season. However, in general, guesthouses are available from about 800 MUR per person, per night, while a 3-star hotel costs from around 3600 MUR per person, per night.
