The official language of Amsterdam is Dutch; however, many of the locals are fluent in English. Before travelling to Amsterdam, visitors from the UK should get a free European Health Insurance card. While it isn't a substitute for health insurance, it entitles the bearer to state provided medical treatment if required. You can expect to eat well, as there are plenty of snack bars and restaurants in Amsterdam, serving up a variety of authentic cuisines from former colonists, such as Indonesian.
