The two dry seasons in Nairobi begin in mid-December till late February, and from mid-June till late September. These are both ideal times to travel. Independence Day (Madaraka Day) is on June 1 and Mashujaa Day (Heroes' Day), falls on October 20. The Nairobi Marathon occurs in October and in December Kenya Music Week commences. The country celebrates Jamhuri Day (Republic day), on December 12.

Travel advice for Kenya and Nairobi

Cholera, malaria and dengue fever all occur in Kenya. Take anti-malarial medication (prophylaxis) if travelling outside of Nairobi. Ensure routine vaccines are up to date. Recommended vaccines include Tetanus, Diptheria, Polio, Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Yellow Fever, Meningitis and Rabies inoculations.

City transport and local accommodation

Jomo Kenyatta, Nairobi's international airport, is 15 km from the business district. Taxis cost roughly 1.500 KES to the city and should take around 30 minutes to get to the city. The number 34 bus takes about 40 minutes, from the Ambassador Hotel to the airport and is priced at roughly 50 KES.

Shared and single hostel rooms cost around 800 Ksh, while luxury hotels will be 10.000 Ksh or thereabouts.

Traffic is very heavy during rush hour, which falls between 7-9am and 4.30-6.30pm, and walking around the small city is faster during these times.

Licensed taxis have a yellow line on the side and their starting rate is set at about 500 KES, and roughly 200 KES for each additional kilometre travelled.

Buses (matatu) are useful when going to the suburbs costing around 10 to 40 ksh.
