There's no ideal time to go to New York, however it's good to note that they can have hot summers and very cold winters. New Years Eve is huge in New York, it's celebrated in style and in a big way. New York travel preparations
British citizens with British passports can apply for entry via the Visa Waiver Programme as long as they're not staying longer than 90 days. British passport holders with other nationalities will need a regular visa. It's good to remember that alcohol and smoking laws are a lot stricter in the USA than the UK. In New York you're not allowed to drink alcohol in public at all, you also can't smoke in parks or public places. The price of groceries in New York are on average around 30% more expensive than London. Restaurant prices are only a little more expensive than London at around 5% more. Do be aware though that when you see prices in cafes, bars and restaurants then taxes aren't usually included and it is also best to add a tip to the bill.
Transfers, transport and staying in New York
From JFK Airport you can get the AirTrain to the metro, it stops at all terminals and heads to Howard Beach, you need to change and head for Midtown or Downtown Manhattan, this takes anything from 45 to 75 minutes. You can also get the bus to the Metro or Long Island Rail Road Station, you can get an express bus to Manhattan, Hudson Valley or Long Island. Or you can get a taxi to Manhattan which will cost you around $52. Hostels cost from around $34 pppn, hotels from around $40 pppn. Residents use the famous yellow cabs but public transport is cheaper and faster. The Metro only costs around $2.75 one-way and a 7-day Metrocard is about $29 with the Express bus being $6.50 for a single fare.
