Lahore is a bustling city, and the capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab. The large metropolitan city is an important historical centre in South Asia. The centre has views and is surrounded by historical buildings. There are mosques, a fort, and a qawwali - an Islamic devotional singing and Sufism centre. There are many restaurants and markets to explore.

Lahore's annual highlights

The best time to visit Lahore is from November through to March. May until September can be very hot. The monsoon season falls between June and September.

Visit during holidays and festivals to experience the local culture.
British passport holders require a visa to travel to Pakistan. A valid passport is required with and should not expire for 6 months from the application date.

Some useful information for your journey 

Lahore is in a risk area for Malaria. Polio, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Typhoid and  Rabies vaccines are recommended. Consumption of alcohol in public places is prohibited. High penalties, including the death penalty can be punishment for blasphemy, adultery and drug use and possession. The cost of living in Pakistan is much lower than in the UK.
An inexpensive restaurant meal costs around 200 PKR, non-alcoholic drinks cost about 50 PKR and bottled water from a supermarket costs approximately  50 PKR. Typical local foods are  "Nihari", a  lamb or beef stew and sweets called "Mithai". 

Transport from Lahore airport and in Lahore

The journey from the Airport to Lahore centre takes between 20 to 30 minutes. A taxi to Gulberg costs about 600 PKR. A taxi to the old city costs about  800 to 1,000 PKR. Travelling on a public bus is the cheapest way of getting from airport to city. Bus B-08, goes to the city bus station and costs about 35 PKR. Some hotels operate a shuttle service.

Hostel accommodation costs approximately 500 PKR for one person. Three star hotels cost around 4,500 PKR. 

Bus fares are priced from around 18 PKR. The Lahore Metrobus has its own fast bus track and a single ticket costs about 20 PKR. A rechargeable ticket, in token form, requires a deposit of about 130 PKR. A Metro is currently being built.

The spectacular Walled  City can be reached on foot or take a rickshaw. Negotiate fares before  accepting a ride. Taxis are not frequently used so should be pre-booked. Minivan transport is best avoided as it is very crowded.
