Climate, attractions and tips
The best time to visit is in the mild months November till April. The five seasons are: Winter from November to February, Spring in March and April and Summer in May and June. The hottest month is June when temperatures can reach 38°C. The Monsoon season is in July and August with July being the wettest month and Autumn is September and October. Muslim festivals such as Eid el-Fitr and Aid el-Adha have varying dates according to the moon calendar and would e a good time to visit for events.
Important information before travel
British passport holders need a visa to enter Pakistan and passports must be valid for at least 6 months when applying. Consult a GP around 8 weeks before you plan to travel as vaccinations such as Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid and Polio are recommended. Islamabad is a relaxed city. Neighbouring Rawalpindi is bustling. Ancient Taxila with archaeological sites is at nearby Gandharan. The cost of living is cheaper than London yet more expensive than other parts of Pakistan. A basic meal costs around 200 Rs. and a business lunch costs approximately Rs. 500.
Arriving and local information
There are no buses from the airport to central Islamabad but shared Suzuki cars are available. Taxis cost around Rs400. Taxis are cheaper if hailed outside the airport. The airport is busy so arrive at least two hours before your flight departs. Guesthouses and inexpensive hotels cost about 1000 Rs and a higher rated hotel will cost around PKR 2200 a night. Minibuses are a fast and cheap way of getting around. Check the price of a journey before travelling in a black and white taxi. Monthly Travelcards are available and cost about RS3,500.
