Best time for Mauritius

Weather: The tropical climate of Mauritius is warm all year with the west coast hot and the east cost notably windy. The peak travel times are from March to May and September to November. During January/February it can be very humid and hot and the cyclone season lasts from January to March.

Events: From January to February is the Holi festival of colours and Cavadee, the Tamil Festival in honour of the god Muruga, which is accompanied by people in trances, fire walking and body piercings. In September come for the pilgrimage to Père Laval shrine in Port Louis for people of all faiths. Eid is at the end of Ramadan. In October/November is the Diwali festival of lights.

Travel preparations for Mauritius

No visas are needed by British passport holders to travel to Mauritius and you may stay for up to 60 days from the date of your entry stamp. Passports need to be valid for the duration of your stay.

It is recommended that before you travel to Mauritius you are vaccinated for Hepatitis A, Typhus, Diphtheria and Tetanus. It is best to ensure you bring along strong mosquito repellent and long clothing to avoid bites as these may transmit Dengue and Chikungunya fever. Visitors should also avoid drinking the tap water.

Local information about Mauritius

Public transport in Mauritius is cheap and bus services usually run until 8pm, with short distance trips costing around 15 MUR and longer journeys about 30 MUR. Taxis cost more and it is a good idea to negotiate prices beforehand, with day tours in taxis costing around 2000-2600 MUR. Meals and spices are relatively inexpensive and vanilla is comparatively cheap. A basic meal will cost around 500 MUR, beer about 150 MUR. Tipping is not common practice.
