The capital city of Islamabad is peaceful and calm. The streets are lined with trees and the tranquil must-see places to visit include Shah Faisal Mosque, the Pakistan Monument and Lok Virsa museum of handicrafts. In contrast, Islamabad's twin city of Rawalpindi is lively and bustling. Here there are bazaars and an old fort to wander around.

When thinking about visiting the city it is good to consider the weather which is mild from November to April. The month of June is the hottest, temperatures often reaching 38°C. The monsoon season takes place in July and August.
Things to know before travelling to Islamabad
British passport holders need a visa to go to Pakistan. On applying make sure your passport is still valid for 6 months or more. Visit a doctor for advice about vaccinations, but generally it is recommended that travellers have up to date Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid and Polio protection as well as all the usual jabs needed in Europe. Food, drink and entertainment is much cheaper than it is in the UK, but generally costs are a little dearer than the rest of Pakistan. A basic meal out costs roughly Rs200 and expect to pay around Rs500 for a fine business lunch. Travelling between the airport and the city centre is by taxi or shared Suzuki car. Hailing a taxi outside of the airport will save some money, but the fare from the arrivals terminal will cost approximately Rs400 one way. Islamabad airport is very busy so allow extra time to get there when catching a flight home.
Information about accommodation and transport
A room in a guesthouse costs roughly Rs1000 a night. There is a choice of 4 star hotels in Islamabad with a nightly room rate of approximately Rs 2200. When using the black and white taxis, make sure to agree a price before setting off.
