Local info and getting to Manchester 

To travel in from Manchester airport railway station to Manchester Piccadilly, which is the central station, costs around £4.50 by train and takes you there in about 15 minutes. There is also a Metrolink to central Manchester, which is 35 minutes, the fare being around £4.50. Number 43 bus also gets you to the city centre a little slower. The Taxi ranks are at Terminal 1 of the airport and will charge about £18 to the centre, taking around 25 minutes if traffic is flowing. 

Budget accommodation can be found from around £15 per person in shared dorms. Economy hotels (3 star) start from around £60 per room. There are also some really good luxury hotels in Manchester for those wanting a treat and plenty of business style hotels too. Local transport is good, with the Metroshuttle bus being free, operating on 3 routes which serve all major central areas. Stagecoach buses cost around £1.50. There's also a tram network, a day ticket costs £5 approx. TFGM also sells the "any bus day ticket" or "system one" which are valid on all buses regardless of operator. Manchester is also small enough to  explore on foot. Taxis are cheaper in Manchester than in London. Traffic in city centre can be very slow.
