The maximum temperature is usually around 30° C with lows around 17° C. Monsoon season is between June and September, it is best to avoid travel during this time. Mumbai has holidays and festivals throughout the year that are celebrated with vigor. Holi Festival, also called Spring Festival, is observed at the full moon in March. The arrival of spring is celebrated along with the anticipation of summer. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birthday of Lord Ganesha between middle of August to middle of September. Important information before you travel
When travelling to Mumbai a visa is needed and is available from the Indian High Commission. Average living costs are much lower in India and a budget meal will cost around 200 Indian rupees (approximately £2). Please check on vaccines and boosters - recommended are: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. Many tourists avoid drinking the tap water and stick to boiled, fried food and peel vegetables and fruit. Be aware there is a significant amount of smog in the dry season, which can be unpleasant.
Local facts about transport and hotels
The Mumbai airport is approximately 28km from Bombay city centre. There are prepaid taxis available priced between about 450 and 600 Rupees. Getting around Mumbai is relatively cheap with a minimum fare around 21 rupees for the first 1.5km and then 1 rupee for every additional 100 meters. A bus day pass will cost approximately 70 rupees. You will need a Smart photo ID card for the bus pass. Be aware that suburban bus trains can be very crowded at rush hour. There is a variety of accommodation options including budget guest houses located in South Mumbai, Colaba, or near railway stations. If you are looking to stay in Mumbai, accommodation can be more expensive compared to the rest of India. A hostel room is approximately 250 rupees and a 3 star hotel is about 4000 rupees.
