First in use in 1925, the airport is about 4 km or 2 miles north east of Klagenfurt town centre. Motorists please take the motorway A2/E66.
The nearest railway station is in Annabichl, about a five minute walk from the airport. Between the main station in Klagenfurt and Annabichl, bus number 40 also operates a service, from Annachbichl, the bus number 45 goes directly to the airport. Aviation history in Klagenfurt dates back to 1924 when a military air base was established near the regional capital. In 1925 this was completely taken over by the Austrian aviation authorities and only a short time later scheduled flights to Venice, Ljubljana and Vienna were taken into operation. In 1938, the German armed forces used the airfield for military purposes. Only in 1951, six years after capitulation, was the airport finally declared free for civil use by the allied forces. Klagenfurt airport became a clear success and very soon afterwards, conditions at the airport were no longer sufficient to deal with growing demands. In 1958 the airport management decided to construct a new airport building, a new control tower as well as to extend the runway to a total of 1,800 m (5,905 ft). Building work took about six years and included extending the runway to a total length of 2,400 m (7,874 ft).
In the 1970s, package tourism took hold of Klagenfurt and a new passenger terminal was constructed that was taken into use as little as one year later. The following years proved very successful for Klagenfurt. As the aeroplanes that were landing in Klagenfurt were increasingly large, the runway was further lengthened to a total of 2,720 m (8,923 ft). In 1984, the airport was able to count a total of 100,000 checked-in passengers. The greatest success was only witnessed in 1996, when the airports link to the south motorway A2 that goes from Vienna to the Italian border was completed. The response of the population at the time was unequalled and a new arrivals building was therefore constructed and the check-in area modernised. Currently (2007), more than half a million passengers use Klagenfurt Airport.
