The airport was opened on 12th December 1962 and is in the far northeast of the small island directly on the Atlantic Ocean. Motorists drive towards Valverde and then on the HI-2 towards Puerto de la Estaca, after about 3 kilometres (1.8 miles) past Valverde, the HI-3 ends directly at the airport.
