History
The airport was already in use during the Second World War, initially for the repair and maintenance of Douglas Aircraft. In 1955, the airport was chosen as the main airport for the Chicago metropolitan region, after it became clear that the Chicago Midway Airport, which had been the main airport since 1931, was unable to handle growing air traffic. In the same year first planes took off and in 1958, an international terminal was constructed. After all building was completed in 1962, the city council finally also moved domestic air traffic from Midway to O'Hare and it thus became the second most important airport in the United States.
