Chicago O'Hare International Airport, besides being the largest and most important of Chicago's airports,is also the largest and most important airport in the State of Illinois. In terms of the number of flights and passenger numbers it is one of the three largest airports in the world. Currently about 15% of all flights handled in the United States are operated at Chicago O'Hare. The most popular route from O'Hare is the flight Chicago-London.Besides O'Hare, there are other major airports in Chicago: Chicago Midway International, the second largest commercial airport in the state, and Chicago Rockford International Airport which is also in the Chicago metropolitan area about 140 km or 100 miles further northwest in the town of Rockford, as well as Gary International Airport, about 35 km or 28 miles south east of downtown Chicago (Chicago Loop) from which only a few charter flights are currently being operated. All airports are administered by the Chicago Airport Authority, which is endeavouring to entice more low-cost carriers to operate flights to and from Gary International.
