Madrid Trip
Madrid is capital of Spain and has a central geographical, financial, political and cultural location.
When is the best time to travel to Madrid?
Madrid can get very hot in the summer with temperatures reaching 40°C - in fact most locals leave the city in search of a cooler climate during July and August. The months of April to June, September and October are sunny, mild and pleasant with the mercury climbing to 25° C at most. The winters are chilly with a dry frost and some days the temperature drops to -10°C, but there are still plenty of sunny, clear days to enjoy. There are a few festivals which are held in Madrid. The 2nd of May each year sees the "Dos de Mayo" festival when a parade, concerts and bullfighting take place. Towards the end of October or early November there is an International Jazz Festival where well-known artists and up-and-coming musicians can be heard in a number of venues.
How much do things cost in Madrid?
Madrid is good value for visitors from the UK. Eating out, drinking, grocery shopping, accommodation and taxis are all much cheaper in Madrid than they are in London. Staying in a guest house or hostel is cheap at roughly EUR 12 a night and 3 star hotels charge, on average, around EUR 80. Hopping on a bus or the metro costs about EUR 1.50 for a single journey - buy 10 tickets and the price is EUR 12 - and then there are cheap day travel cards too. Getting into the famous galleries of Madrid cost roughly EUR 12, but it is free at certain times, like after 6pm or on Sunday mornings, so check on their websites before planning an itinerary and save a bit of cash.
Navigating Madrid and finding accommodation
The airport of Madrid is located 13 km NE of the city centre. Getting from the airport into the centre of Madrid is easy as there is an underground station at the airport, which can be found at Terminal 4, and a taxi ride only takes about half an hour.
