- Directions by car: The airport is about 12 km or 7 miles north of the inner city and is signposted.
Location
First in use in 1960, the airport is about 12 km or 7 miles north of central Quito in the district of Chaupicruz. It is about 2800 meters or 9000 ft above sea level and is one of the highest lying airports in the world. Taxis are available in front of the terminal and there is a nearby bus stop with buses operating to the city.
Since it is located in the heart of the capital and is also one of the world's most dangerous airports to land at, in 2006 work began on building a safer airport about 30 kilometres or 20 miles further east in Tabaela. After completion, which is expected to be in 2011 at the earliest, the new airport is to replace Mariscal Sucre.
