Reasons to visit Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik Riviera

The Croatian city of Dubrovnik is considered one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean and has long been a popular tourist destination along with the coastal area, the Dubrovnik Riviera, and the islands off the coast. Especially the historic old town, which is a World Heritage Site, and the city walls are worth seeing. Dubrovnik is also an ideal starting point for relaxed excursions along the Adriatic coast. Some of the most popular holiday resorts of Croatia, such as Cavtat, Dubrovnik Lapad or Mlini. are located within easy reach of Dubrovnik airport:

When is the best time for a Dubrovnik holiday?

As far as the weather is concerned, the best time to visit Dubrovnik is from April to October. Summers in the area are very warm; winters are mild but can be rainy. Planning a holiday during the months of July and August is particularly worthwhile, as this is when the Dubrovnik Summer Festival takes place. Holidaymakers can witness theatre performances and concerts, among other things. Another important festival is the city festival of St. Blasius on 3rd February.

Before the trip: prices and travel tips

The cost of living in Croatia is actually lower than in the UK, but many things in Dubrovnik are overpriced, especially in the tourist areas in the old town. A cheap meal in a restaurant costs about 60 HRK. Soft drinks cost about 15 HRK, while beer costs between 20 and 42 HRK, depending on the restaurant chosen.

Holidaymakers in Dubrovnik should definitely try the speciality "Zelena menestra" made of kale, pork bacon and potatoes. The local braised beef is also highly recommended.

If you travel to Dubrovnik, you should plan time for excursions to the offshore islands and the city walls. Be careful in the mountains southeast of the city, as mines are still found scattered around the area.

Dubrovnik airport transport: what are the options?

The airport shuttle bus takes about half an hour from the airport to the city centre for about 40 HRK. A taxi ride costs about 220 to 300 HRK and takes the same amount of time.

If you want to travel cheaply, you can take bus lines 11, 27 and 38 into the city for about HRK 28. Local bus lines operate in the city itself. The old town is a pedestrian zone.

An overnight stay in a hostel will be priced from around 155 HRK; in a three-star hotel you can expect to pay from around 770 HRK.
