Besides being used for commercial flights, the airport is also the largest freight airport in the state. It is near Näpaidhe, in the city of the same name about 100 miles east of the capital Rio de Janeiro.

Opened in 1998 , the airport is 5 miles south west of the centre of the city directly on the main road RJ-102, between Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo. Regular bus services to the airport are operated from the holiday resorts Cabo Frio, Arraial do Cabo and Armação dos Búzios.
